Cap'n Dave's Paleontological
Scrapbook
Cap'n Dave's Dinosaur Lectures &
Shows
My first endeavor in the world of
paleontology.  I helped clean and
catalog the tracks at the
Heritage
Museum of the Texas Hill County.

I'm sitting next to a track of some form
of iguanodontid, possibly
Tenotosaurus.  I'm wearing the first in
a series of hats.
Here I am with my friends
Patricia Appleton and her
daughter, anthropologist
Kiyomi Gaines as we dig up
a late ice-age baby bison
skeleton in a Texas cave.
You can just make out the
scapula (shoulder blade) in
the muck.

Another hat.
In this photo we can see two
vertebrates with stupid hats
in front the Alamo in San
Antonio, TX.  We were
promoting Dinosaurus Tex at
the San Antonio Botanical
Gardens.  The dinosaur is
Edmontosaurus, one of the
last duckbill dinosaurs.

I hated that hat (mine and the
dinosaur's).
I had the honor a few years ago
to work briefly with Dr. James
Farlow measuring and
cataloging dinosaur tracks in
Texas.  As you can see I'm still
trying to find a hat I like.
For many years I have had the
pleasure of working with Texas
Dinosaur celebrity, Dinosaur
George Blasing.  We owned a
company called Dinosaur World.
We recently closed the company
to pursue our own projects, but
we still colaborate from time to
time.

BTW I finally found a hat that I
like.  George doesn't really have
that much hair. At least not on his
head.

Here's George's website:

And now we see an
enthralled audience at one of
my lectures at the
Valley of
Fire State Park, NV.  This is
one of my favorite places in
Nevada and the fine folks out
there gave me my start
lecturing in the Desert
Southwest.  It's a beautiful,
natural location, not too far
from my home in Las Vegas.
By this time the black hat has
become my trademark.
Another one of my favorite
spots in the Southwest is the
St.
George Dinosaur Discovery Site
at Johnson Farm in St. George,
UT.  They have one of the most
impressive trackway sites in the
world!!  It's all early Jurassic and
contains over
2000 tracks of
animals such as Dilophosaurus,
Megapnasaurus and other
animals.  They even have
dinosaur swim tracks and even
more impressive; tracks where
a Dilophosaurus squatted in the
muck.  It's incredible.  I'm
working with them on various
education programs.  Please
visit their website (click on the
link above) for directions and
hours.  You won't be sorry
.
Hard to believe that the little
bug in the photo to the left is
over 520,000,000 years old.
It's a trilobite called
Amecephalus piochensis. I
was the first human to have
ever seen this critter when I
dug it up near Pioche, NV in
April of 2007.  I joined the
Utah Friends of
Paleontology on one of their
digs with Paleontologist
Andrew Milner.  He helped
me find the right place to dig
and gave me some pointers.
Boy was he sorry when I
ended up with the best find
of the day.
